Interested in building an independent wireless network?
QUT Creative Industries Precinct artists-in-residence Christoph Wachter and Mathias Jud have travelled the world installing large independent computer networks from scratch, working with activists in locations as diverse as China, Syria and the banlieues of Paris to reinstate online communication.
This workshop explores the possibilities and limits of our communication devices, how one person can make oneself heard while another is deprived of the means for personal expression.
Echoing multiple works by Wachter & Jud, the workshop uses open and participatory network qaul.net to create an autonomous network. Working independently of mobile service providers and the internet, this network allows participants to connect mobile devices via wi-fi. Students also construct antennas from tin cans in order to expand the network range.
