Media and digital art organisations can contact us at any time if they are interested in becoming a partner.

Concept

In our increasingly digitized, technology driven world, next to scientists and programmers, it is artists, who create alternative visions for a more sustainable and just society. Collaboration between these communities helps us to reflect on the impact of new technologies on society. If Europe wants to take its own technological path, whilst opposing nascent anti-democratic movements, it should focus on the creative, communicative, critical and unifying potential of the arts. Through support for emerging artists we can contribute to secure a tolerant and democratic future for citizens of Europe. The European Media Art Platform (EMAP) was founded for this purpose.

The basic idea of the program is to enable European media art organisations and artists to collaborate on projects and consequently to create closer bonds between these organisations and to consider how respective national and cultural identities might enrich and enhance one another, as opposed to being divisive.

EMAP/EMARE offers an opportunity to work within these bounds, as defined by the individual artists and artists groups, which enables the latter to develop their own projects within a new context, and thereby give something back, in turn, to their host organization.

This process of encouraging artists' projects and building stronger links between media organizations is enhanced by the rapid development of networked technologies and also reflects the moves towards integration taking place throughout Europe.

The artistic works produced at EMAP/EMARE help us to reflect the new technologies and sometimes even create alternatives to the tools of the big high-tech corporations.

The various new technologies require a relatively high degree of know-how and, although each individual organization has its own unique set-up, facilities and staff, opportunities for the exchange of information and skills give a further boost to the programme. Sharing insights, facilities and knowledge also fosters greater efficiency when dealing with scientists or the international media market (issues such as TV broadcasting, co-productions, co-funding, etc.) and the art world (festivals, museums, galeries, etc.).

EMAP is always open to collaborate with new associated partners. Associated partners benefit from a wide network, invitations to EMAP workshops, conferences and festivals, they can apply for EMAP artists presentation grants and have access to the EMAP submission and research database. If you are a media art organisation with an interest in joining our network, please contact us: info@emare.eu.

Structure
  • Member organizations meet on different occasions (at transmediale, ars electronica, Werkleitz Festival, Antre Peaux Festival, Impakt Festival, etc.), to coordinate activities.
  • All EMAP member organisations issue a joint, Europe-wide call for entries.
  • All EMAP member organisations participate (for about 3-6 days) at the jury panel hosted by a different partner each year (on site or online).
  • Any artist who works with digital media and is EU resident or taxpayer in an EU member country is eligible to apply. We hope we can expand this internationally in the future. must be
  • Entries on call.emare.eu should include a CV, (audio)visual documentation of approx. 3 reference projects and a precise proposal including technical reader and timeframe for the project to be developed within EMARE. Students are not permitted to apply but emerging artists are encouraged.
  • Each EMAP member organisation selects its favourite project and invites the artist or group to stay at its lab for two to three months. Together with the staff there, but also with external experts, mainly from the scientific or technological sector, they can develop their projects and if necessary already produce them. In addition to the scholarship, the artists receive travel and accommodation expenses, a production budget and free support as well as access to all studios and the host's existing technology. The work on the project can have already started before the stay and can be continued afterwards. Remote residencies from home are also possible if in accordance with the host.
  • Artists present their work at their host organisation but also EMAP members might curate their work for their festivals or group shows.
  • The finished works can be selected for various presentations at members group shows in different European countries or with small partner presentation grants even beyond.
  • Further associated partner organizations help to produce, present, disseminate and promote the platform and the commissioned artists’ projects and are potential future members of the platform. They have access to the submission database, receive invitations to festivals, confereneces and workshsops and can apply for small presentation grants to present one of the EMAP commissions.
