Werktank, factory for new and old media, is a production platform in Leuven, Belgium. We operate at the crossroads of visual art, science and technology.
Werktank investigates how digital technology can expand the artist's toolbox. On the other hand, we take a critical stance and reflect on the rapidly evolving technology and the societal and social transformation that goes with it. We are convinced that the mix of new and old technology in the arts can provide new insights into contemporary social problems. What do traditional artisanal techniques learn us about sustainibility and what happens when new media infects, mutate and transform them?
Werktank accompanies artists through all the phases of the creation process of media art, from the research process till the final realisation and active distribution of the work, by offering residencies, financial and productional support. Our headquarters are situated in the heart of the city of Leuven (Belgium) and consist of offices, workspaces and a technical workshop. We are an inter(national) organisation, but are also firmly rooted in the city, closely collaborating with local actors to give new impulses to its emerging artistic scene.
