Maria Smigielska & Compmonks

Maria Smigielska is an architect and researcher educated in Switzerland and Poland, based in Zurich. Currently working at Digital Building Technologies, ETH. Her interest lies in the enhancement of potentials for digital and physical creation of architectural elements, design objects and mixed media installations, by using digital and interactive technologies for encoding and modulating materials properties, custom fabrication and design strategies. She exhibits internationally since 2013, with recent appearances at Tallinn Architecture Biennale 2017, Biennale for Arts and Technology in Trondheim 2020 and ZKM Karlsruhe 2021.

Compmonks is a trained architect graduated from France and a researcher in technology for architecture based in Switzerland. He obtained in PhD in 2022 and currently leads a research on interactive and generative design with brain-computer interfaces at ETH Zürich. His artistic work follows a series of design objects and mixed-media installations shedding light on the power of combining humans with computers. Among his most recent appearances are the ‘Neurons’ exhibition at Centre Pompidou Paris 2020, the Biennale for Arts and Technology Trondheim 2020, and the ‘Biomedia’ exhibition at ZKM Karlsruhe in 2021.
