Absonus Lab is a non-profit association based in Estarreja, Portugal, founded in 2022. It aims to create an innovative sound and music experimentation lab, blending research, art, technology and science through post-digital methodologies with a transdisciplinary approach. The lab focuses on the intersection of culture, communities, and production methods, exploring the aesthetic relationships between music and society, inspired by avant-garde, post-industrial, and post-techno traditions. Absonus Lab promotes innovative strategies for sound art, digital media, computer music, and experimental electronic music, engaging in both local and international events. Through its work, Absonus Lab seeks to challenge conventional narratives and generate new insights into the aesthetic and formal significance of sound in the context of today’s society. Absonus Lab is intentionally located outside of Portugal’s major urban centers, opting for a decentralized model that encourages engagement with local and regional communities. By operating from Estarreja, the lab connects directly with diverse groups of artists, researchers, and audiences who might otherwise lack access to sound and digital art practices. This strategic allows the lab to contribute to the cultural and intellectual enrichment of the Centro Region of Portugal, while maintaining a broader European and global networking perspective. By continuously exploring the evolving relationships between music, society and digital technology, the lab aims to drive new developments in both academic and artistic fields, while fostering a global dialogue about the future of sound and its role in shaping human experience.
