Atemlos / Breathless (2012)

Pim Zwier

3-channel video installation

Various animal species taken from nature and transformed, via taxidermy, into specimens preserved for scientific use; mounted examples in showcases, dried skins and insects in chests of drawers, bones and skulls in boxes. The first specimens collected became the types that identify and gave the name to their species. Zoological collections as repositories of biodiversity and the tangible memories of extinct species. The opportunity to look an extinct animal in the (glass) eye. Collections are still expanding. By following taxidermists and entomologist at work the triple screen video-installation reveals the transformation of insects and mammals into becoming specimens. The photo series documents the results.
